Randy Smith Jr. wins Wayne Hicks Memorial by 0.031 seconds over Jeffrey Sears

Big fields of IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods and E-Modifieds all checked in for Modified Madness at US 36 Raceway. The IMCA Sport Mods had a little bit extra on the line as they raced the Wayne Hicks Memorial, which brought a $1,066 payday to the winner. Randy Smith Jr. took the early lead and although he led most of the race it didn’t come without challenges.

Early in the race, Jeffrey Sears and Steven Clancy swapped the second position back and forth and that allowed Smith to get away. Once Sears cleared Clancy, he had his sights set on Smith. Smith ran the bottom of the track, while Sears ran the top. A late race caution set up a green-white-checkered finish. Both drivers went to their preferred lines. In the final corner, Smith slid up to protect the top. Sears saw it coming and crossed to the bottom. The two raced to the line, and Smith earned the win by 0.031 seconds. Sears finished second, with current US 36 Raceway Sport Mod point leader Clancy in third. Cade Richards finished fourth, with Josh Munsen in fifth. Jason Nelson earned the hard charger award and $66 bonus by moving up five positions in the feature.

At the end of the night, the Sport Mods ran the Shocker Chassis Six Pack Shootout. Richards, Sears, Clancy, Munsen, Chris Wright and Coleman Browning were the six voted in by the fans. The double elimination tournament two car races provided some great battled. Richards and Wright were the two that worked their way through the bracket, with Wright getting the final say and picking up the

The 18-car IMCA Modified field were set to race for a $1,066 check as well. Kyle Brown set the early pace and led much of the early part of the race. Due to the redraw, some of the fastest cars in the field started further back and late in the race everything converged together. Chad Andersen worked his way to second and made a move for the lead. Him and Brown made contact and in doing so, Steven Bowers Jr. and Chad Clancy shot the gap to take over first and second. Bowers, who started tenth, and Clancy who started 12th, now raced for the lead with only a few laps to go. Bowers seemed to develop an issue as Clancy made a move for the lead. Clancy would go on to win the race. Andersen hung on for second. Tyler Hibner, who started way back in the 16th position, charged to finish third, while Bowers and Brandon Williams made up the rest of the top five.

The 23-car E-Modified field were set to run 18 laps for a $466 check. Justin Asher did all the right things from the pole position and led the entire race on his way to the win. With only one caution in the race, Asher had to deal with lap traffic and that allowed Matt Dorssom and Kameron Hanes to close. Although, once they reached lap traffic the gap stabilized. After the one late race caution, Asher had a great restart and gave himself enough of a gap to run away with the race. Dorssom finished second with Hanes third. Gary Ainsworth and Alek Breckenridge made up the rest of the top five.

In the IMCA Sprint Car feature, Jack Potter again would jump out to the lead. For the last several races, Potter would comfortable lead the early part of the race only for issues to spoil it late in the race. This time, Potter would lead well past halfway before Mike Moore found a little more out of his racecar and threw a slider into turn one. Potter crossed back over and tried to return the favor in turn four, but Moore powered past to take his second win of 2019 at US 36. Matt Richards would move into the second position, while Potter faded to third. Mike Houseman Jr. and Toby Chapman finished fourth and fifth.

Mich Ross would bolt from a fourth place starting position to take the early lead in the IMCA Stock Cars. He had to deal with one late race caution, but he handled it well and picked up win number one of 2019 at US 36. JJ Baumli finished second after starting seventh. Gerald Wahwahsuck finshed third, while current points leader Blake Peeler finished fourth. Connor Masoner rounded out the top five.

Conrad Kaufman put his Pure Stock in Westfall GMC Victory Lane as he became only the third different Pure Stock driver to win in 2019. Current points leader Connor Masoner finished second. Colten Ishmael lead early and finished third. Shaun Huston finished fourth with Anthony Persell in fifth.

Up next for US 36 Raceway is another visit from the ASCS Warrior Region. The Sprint Series of Nebraska will also be on hand. The IMCA Modifieds and Pure Stocks are also on the card.
