OSBORN, Mo. – Before Thomas Kennedy showed the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Cars around the high banks of US 36 Raceway, two classes that contest weekly at US 36 took to the track for their features.
The IMCA Sport Mods were first out for their 15-lap event. Nicholas Carpenter took the lead at the drop of the green flag and paced the first half of the race. During that time, Steven Clancy began to slowly work his way through the field. After starting 10th, Clancy had to pick and choose where to make his passes. A late caution allowed him to close on Carpenter and in turn three Clancy made his move to the point with a few laps remaining.
Clancy then opened up a couple car length lead and made his second trip to Westfall GMC Victory Lane this season. Tim Eaton also had an impressive run, moving up ten spots to finish second. Carpenter had a moment on the final lap in turn three but was able to make the save and finish third. Last week’s feature winner, Chris Wright, finished fourth and Jeffrey Sears rounded out the top five.
The Pure Stocks saw Anthony Persell jump to the lead and set an early pace few could match. As Persell drove away, Connor Masoner weaved his way through the field and found himself in second with four to go. Although, Persell had built up a substantial lead and Masoner would need a caution to catch him. Masoner got that caution on the white flag lap. That set up a green, white, checkered finish.
Persell set a fast restart pace for the field and got a good restart giving himself a car length into turn one. Masoner closed that in two and off of four the two were side-by-side. Persell led at the line with the white flag in the air. The next time around Masoner would clear off of four to go three for three on the season. Persell finished second with Conrad Kaufman third, Tyler Starmer fourth and Jack Turner fifth.
Up next for US 36 Raceway on Friday, May 3, is the next installment of the Season Championship featuring the IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Winged Sprints, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Mods and E-Modifieds. Pure Stocks have the night off. Pits for the event open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 6 p.m., hot laps at 7:30 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
